Secrets to Dog Training
Before you go ahead and start on teaching your dog
new tricks there are a few secrets to dog training
that I want to let you in on as they will really
help you when training your dog.
What we must always have
in mind is that dogs are pack animals that rely on
their pack in order to survive. This knowledge is
something all dogs are born with and it will stay
with them their whole lives. A dog that was to live
totally isolated would suffer a great deal and grow
mentally ill quite fast! Dogs also need a strict
hierarchy within their pack in order for their world
to make sense, and so all dogs that see the chance
to wear the leader cap will try and take that
chance.
Now do you see the
comparison with the human world? It’s quite amazing
really.
Being the leader of the pack
It is so crucial that you are showing
the dog that you are the leader from the very first
day you bring him home in order to gain the respect,
trust and friendship of your dog. If the dog does
not see you as the leader or see’s a weak leader
that sets no boundaries then you and eventually the
dog will suffer and be unhappy.
Luckily you do not have to hit or fight the dog in
order to become the leader. But you do need to be
strict from day one and show him that there are
consequences if your rules are not followed. However
be sure to correct the dog immediately after he
breaks one of your rules in order for the dog to
pick up the connection between the wrongdoing and
the consequence.
A very good trick to show the dog that you are the
leader is when you feed the dog. Feeding time is
the most important time in a dogs life and is where
the hierarchy is determined. In the dogs picture of
how the world works, the leader is the first to eat
and it is him that tells the dog when it is allowed
to eat.
To do this, all you have is to keep the dog from the
bowl of food by pushing him away while you lean over
the food, in order to further strengthen your
ownership of the food you might clear your throat
and thereby sending the dog a message that you are
the owner here. When the dog backs of you then stand
up and allow the dog to eat in peace. He got the
point and you have put some vital points into your
leader of the pack account.
As the dog grows he will respect you enough to not
try and eat while you are holding the bowl of
bending over it.
